Purchasing Domain Names Quick Steps

If we want to develop a website, domain name is the first thing crossing to our mind, absolutely. By having a good domain name, which similar name to our company or exact business, our website become more credibility than our business competitors. In real world, there is many websites have proven about this, such as intel.com, walmart.com, nokia.com, etc…

Here is the quick steps for purchasing domain names:

Step 1. Choosing Good Domain Names

From my experience and observation, good domain names criteria is:

1. .com only
   .com TLD (top level domains) means “commerce” which more popular than other TLDs. If competitor domain name is product.net, and your domain name is product.com, considerable people always think .com is more establish website. People also like to remember .com domain name, if they forgot the exact domain name TLD, they will just type in .com TLD and you have free traffics there!
2. exact company / business name
   as i told before, your website have more credibility when your website domaine, company, business, even email domain have the same name.
3. easy name
   easy tor remember, easy to spell, easy to say domain name -  is more likely.
4. branding name
   think of the long term marketing investment. Many big companies looking forward for branding domain names for their business.
   eg: “scooters.com” will forward to “powersports.honda.com” domain name seems want to monopoly scooters market on internet!

Step 2. Check Domain Names Availability

Available Domain Name

Available domain name means that domain name is available to register, if you found certain desired domain name still does not registered yet, you have opportunity to register that domain name as far it is still available. You can check domain name availability at any domain registrars such as godaddy, moniker and name.com.

Unavailable Domain Name

When certain domain name has been registered / taken by someone, that domain name is unavailable for registration anymore. There are still have other ways in order to get unavailable domain name:

Buy domain name from current domain owner

• type in that domain name on your internet browser. If domain parking page opened, find “for sale” link which means the domain name owner is ready to sell that domain name.
• if you found that domain name is used for certain website. Find “contact us” link, ask them whether if they want to sell that domain or not. Normally, developed domain name into certain website is not for sale especially business oriented website, but you can still give a try.
• if you not found any contact information on that website, go to any registrar website and use their “whois service” in order to check registration information for that domain name. Use that domain  owner information details (name, address, email) to ask if he/she want to sale that domain name.

Last choice…

• if that domain name registration information has been set to private/privacy option, find that domain name at domain name aftermarket website such as afternic and sedo.
• if you not found that domain name at any domain name aftermarket website, your last opportunity is backorder that domain name at snapnames, pool and namejet. You only need to pay certain fees if any of these websites has grabbed succesfully that domain name for you when that domain name expired. You will redirected to auction if there have other people also interested to backorder that domain name.

Step 3. Purchasing Domain Names

If you want to purchase any available domain names, you can do that easily at any domain name registrars. You also can purchase domain name at resellers website, but i really recommend anybody to purchase domain names at accredited registrars by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) as listed here. By selecting accredited registrars, you have more protection by ICANN and have more technical support from expert helpdesk staffs from those registrars.

If you have opportunity to buy domain names from current owner only, please negotiate properly about the price, domain transfer process and do not forget about additional fees. I really advise you to use escrow services for secure transaction, as soon as possible when negotiation has been agreed by seller and buyer, such as escrow.com, afternic escrow or sedo escrow.
